Contamination and Pollution

Contamination and pollution come from many sources, most is human-induced, and can have devastating effects on ecosystems and biodiversity, accumulating in the soil, air, and water. Such substances can disrupt metabolic processes in plants, animals, microorganisms, and humans.

How does Newfoundland and Labrador stack up to the rest of Canada and the world for prevention and mitigation of pollution? To find out, we focused on two pollution sources: tailings impoundment and municipal solid waste. For municipal solid waste, we looked at two methods of disposal: landfill, which can pollute the water and soil, and incineration, which produces air pollution.
