Protection of species outside protected areas is critical, with an astounding 87% of the earth’s surface is unprotected, increasing human activity will have huge negative impacts on species and their habitats. There are many organizations that strive to increase conservation in these not protected areas, both regionally, and internationally. These organizations help increase conservation in a variety of ways from raising public awareness, to setting policies to help conserve threatened species. Here are just some examples of some organizations that help conservation efforts outside protected areas.

Major Conservation Organizations

The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is a non-profit organization that has been around since 1962. NCC prides itself on its science-based, entrepreneurial approach to protecting species by way of action – in most cases by protecting vulnerable habitats. Over the last 51 years, NCC and its partners have managed to protect over 1 million hectares across Canada. NCC consists of 7 regions, with Newfoundland and Labrador comprising the most easterly region.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Network (NLEN) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization that serves as an umbrella group for non-profit organizations across the province that share similar goals of conservation, restoration, and sustainable use of resources. The strength of the network is derived from the work done by its member groups in areas such as gaining protected areas, environmental education, mining and mining issue, wildlife protection, waste management, and fisheries.

The Natural Resource Defence Council is an International organization that has over 1.3 million members, and is commanded by a group of 350 lawyer, scientists, and other professionals. The organization operates by making scientific observations and assessments, and follows through by pursuing legal action. The lawyers, scientists, and 1.3 million supporters and activists help protect areas across the globe. Their main focuses include preserving wetlands, restoring marine habitats, reducing the spread of toxic chemicals, as well as producing clean energy and managing global warming.

Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador is yet another non-profit organization, yet their mandate is to provide training and employment to youth in areas of environmental and cultural heritage conservation. The organization was created in 1992, and works with communities and partners to sustain, increase, and recover natural and cultural resources in the province.

The world wildlife fund is perhaps one of, if not the most popular international conservation organizations in the world. This organization works on a global scale with multiple partners and agencies to protect natural areas and wild populations, reduce pollution, and to promote sustainable use of natural resources. The WWF is known for its ability to extend its reach of conservation education and action into not only developed countries, but third world countries as well.

CITES is the Convention for International Trade of Endangered Species. It is an international agreement in which 99 countries (including Canada) adhere voluntarily for to help ensure the survival of economically valuable threatened species.  Specifically, CITES deals with monitoring or restricting the international trading of endangered species. It is legally binding, but does not take the place of national laws. Instead it provides a framework to be respected by each country which has to adopt its own legislation. Restricting the international trade should reduce the harvest pressures and thus aiding in the conservation of these endangered species.
