Protected Areas in Review

As you now know, terrestrial protected areas are very important to the environment, biodiversity, and ecosystem not only in Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada but all over the world. Protected areas exist everywhere, and serve their own individual purposes. There are many different types of protected areas that exist, that are created based upon their own needs. As an example, National Parks are founded to boost tourism, the economy, and preserve ecological integrity.

Every region has their own conservation efforts in place, however they do also follow the guidelines of IUCN and the Convention of Biological Diversity. This provides each nation to prioritize their own needs, but to also contribute globally to conserving the environment.

As of 2009, Germany was in the world's lead of total protected land area of 40.5%, while Europe is one of the leading nations of the world. As you can see, Canada and the United States both fall short compared to other nations (8.0% and 14.8% land area protected respectively), however they are both making major conservation efforts and slowly increasing their protected land area.

- In 1885 Banff was the first federal area for park reserved.
- Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario was founded as the first provincial park in 1893.
- The Dominion Wildlife Service (now known as the Canadian Wildlife Service) was created in 1947.
-The largest federal protected area is located in Nunavut and is called the Queen Maud Gulf Migratory Bird Sanctuary, and was created in 1961 (8).
