While Norway seems to confidently rule out negative impacts of fish farming as long as there are certain regulations put in place, Canada is not so advanced yet, however research is underway.

For example the Finfish site development program in Newfoundland and Labrador is making an effort to determine if organic deposits from the fish farm have a negative impact on benthic habitats (>100m deep). Sediment samples were taking as well as video of the benthic habitat, both surrounding fish farms and away from fish farms. This research (DFO,2011) ran from May 2010 to March 2013.

Read about this program under "Finfish aquaculturesite development : fate of fish waste"

There are other research programs much like this one, for example

                              - Tracking the re-suspension and transport dynamics of aquaculture wastes and their associated sediments for predictive model development and refinement is research based in Bliss harbour New Brunswick

-Indicators of coastal ecosystems is ran through Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia.

While the impacts of waste products such as nitrogen and phosphorous is not yet know, there is much research in this area, and hopefully answers and sustainability strategies arise from this research.

Environmental Impacts of Aquaculture in Norway and Canada

In Norway it has been found that organic material, as well as dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus  from aquaculture are only a minor environmental problem. Norway utilizes their long coast line and only has fish in exposed areas or deep fjords to keep their water quality high.

These locations have a high carrying capacity for the nutrients and organic material that is a byproduct of fish farming. All fish farms in Norway are assessed and issued a discharge permit by environment authorities. These permits impose strict limits on the quantity of matter being discharged, this limit is determined on a scientific basis.
On the contrary, the mangroves on the coast of Thailand are being destroyed by pollution caused by shrimp farming (Farming the seas) .
