DFO oceanographic study of the south coast of NL

This project aims to create the infrastructure and technology to be able to create an oceanography program that can map the ocean floor and potential zones that can help in the establishment of management areas. The data collected will be currents, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity.

Finfish aquaculture site development : Fate of Fish waste.

This projects goal is to determine the the effects the waste of fish farms have on benthic habitats. Fish farm produce a lot of nitrogen and phosphorous which may be destroying surrounding habitat.

Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) has described the ongoing research in Atlantic Canada that is contributing to conservation strategies. Newfoundland and Labrador is an active part of this research and with the $900,000 strategy released in June 2011, NL is doing quite well on conservation surrounding aquaculture.

ï»¿An investigation of reproduction between wild and farmed salmon in Newfoundland

This project aims to answer the breeding success between native and farmed salmon.

Although it is very difficult to quantify the effects of farmed salmon on the native populations due to the large habitat area, migratory patterns, habitat loss, climate change, and anthropogenic disturbances. This study looks at the genetic make up of both native and wild salmon and the differences in this make up in an offspring of these two populations
